Acne and Acne scars are a common skin condition affecting a large portion of the population. The severity of acne can vary from person to person. In some cases, no scarring will occur, whereas in some others significant visible acne scars can develop which severely affect the quality of life of its sufferers and their general confidence levels. Risks for developing acne scars include delayed treatment for acne (or inappropriate treatment), strong family history, and manual manipulation of the acne lesions. It is therefore essential that acne is treated early and appropriately by a qualified therapist or a dermatologist. Roughly 30% of the population experiences acne at some stage in their life. And 95% of them state that it drastically impacts their daily lives and emotional well-being. Unfortunately, acne scarring can commonly occur as a complication of acne. Scarring occurs when the body works too hard to heal the wounds caused by acne and produces excess collagen that builds up in the skin. This then stays in place permanently, causing the appearance of scars.
There are three different types of acne scar, classified according to the shape of the scar:
- Cobblestone scars (uneven skin)
- Box-car type scars (craters in the skin)
- Ice-pick scars (small deep holes)
Whilst some scars will heal slightly on their own, acne scars are usually permanent unless otherwise treated. Scarring can also be increased if spots are picked, so it is important to avoid this as much as possible.
Acne scars form when there is damage to the skin during an acne breakout. When the skin produces too much collagen while healing, it can lead to scarring.
There are three main types - ice pick scars (deep pits), boxcar scars (craters with sharp edges), and rolling scars (wide depressions with sloping edges).
Treating acne early and effectively can help prevent scarring. Avoid picking/popping pimples as this can worsen scarring. See a dermatologist if you have severe or persistent acne.
